Modem
The modem works with the slmdm-2.7.10 driver from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/, but only after one applies the strange patch described at http://www.vgcomputing.com.au/lrtecras1.html#Modem (Thanks to Paolo Destefanis for the hint). For the slmdm-2.7.10 driver the ATI3 command states, that the modem is unknown but Smart Link compatible.
Further information
Despite the fact that the modem actually works, I still would be interested in finding a less hackish solution and to identify my modem chipset. I tried the following steps.
The modem shows up in the lspci listing: 00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Modem (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [Generic]) Subsystem: Toshiba America Info Systems: Unknown device 0001 Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66Mhz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- Interrupt: pin B routed to IRQ 10 Region 0: I/O ports at 2400 [size=256] Region 1: I/O ports at 2000 [size=128] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1- D2- AuxCurrent=375mA PME(D0+,D1-,D2-,D3hot+,D3cold+) Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME-
Under Windows XP the Modem identifies itself as follows: ATI3 TOSHIBA V.90 Data+Fax Software Modem Version 3.1.116 ATI4 Built on 09/17/2002 16:12:37 ATI5 3.1.116, AMR Intel MB, AC97 ID:SIL REV:0x27, 06
I run the scanModem script from http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz. The output states [...] Vendor 1179 is Toshiba Using some Intel AMR motherboards in laptops. Below are outputs from ATI commands under MS Windows for Subsystem: 1179:0001 ATI3 TOSHIBA V.90 Data+Fax Software Modem Version 3.1.89 ATI5 3.1.89, AMR Intel MB, AC97 ID:SIL REV:0x27, 19 Hopefully there will be Linux support from Intel in 2003 See success report at: http://phep2.technion.ac.il/linmodems/archive-third/msg00120.html with slmdm-2.7.10 driver at http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/ [...]
I tried newer versions of the SmartLink Soft Modem driver from the SmartLink page. Both, slmdm-2.7.14 and the beta version slmodem-2.8.2 did not work for me. The error message for the latter was SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.8.2 Jul 14 2003 23:41:58 SmartLink AMRMO modem. amrmo: probe 8086:24c6 Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Modem Controller : ICH4 card... ttySL0: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Modem Controller This driver is not compatible with the installed modem codec. Please contact your modem provider for support.
Despite the error message above, the 2.8.2 version of slmodem seems to actually detect the modem. Using minicom on the device /dev/ttySL0 I can send AT commands to the modem. Trying to call a number via ATDT actually creates some dial tones and such, but seems to call the wrong number then. One of the SmartLink people told me that this is an Agere modem based on a SmartLink uncompatible chip.
Modem Resources
There is a Linmodem Resources page. The very technical AC97 Codec specification can be found at the Intel web site.
