i am a visiting professor here at the faculty of anglistik und amerikanistik, and i will be here for 3 months.
everything here seems to be on windows, and i am feeling nostalgic about my linux box back home in Pune, India, where the whole university intra-net runs on RH 7.1
is there someone i can talk to? i am thinking of hiring/buying a laptop on which i plan to put Linux RH flavour. i might need advise on purchase of laptop etc.

You can find a good hardware-database by http://www.suse.de , in german, or http://www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html, in english. Please searching for details, e.g. network-card, graphics controller, ... or what you need. I think, RedHat is a large distribution with good hardware-identification this is not a problem.

Hi,
just have a look at http://www.mobilix.org, there you'll find answers for nearly any question in mobile Linux Computing. With the advice of this site I got runnin' my notebook with an old SuSE distribution.
See ya!

Hello Aniket,
thanks for your mail to our list. (I don't know if you're subscribed, if not, you should to it - otherwise no reply will reach you. Subscribing is possible at http://lug-dd.schlittermann.de/)

Yes, all the about 180 members of this mailing list ;-)

Best experiences I've made with IBM Thinkpads, the only (at my POV) drawback is their price. But on the otherhand - you get a good value for the money (superior keyboard, 3 years warranty (except for the low budget models), superior design (again: my POV)). [No, I'm not an IBM dealer, but I think, every new laptop will be again a ThinkPad...]
By the way - the two models I've used had have no problems at all with Linux, APM, suspend to disk/RAM and even resume(!) from disk/RAM. And there seems to be a broad user base... IBM is omnipresent ;-), probably in India too.
[Ok, some problems I encountered: o Sound didn't work reliable on my first ThinkPad, but I think it was my ignorance... o The hard disk of my first model has been changed two times (but I'm afraid, I motor biked the disk to death on several 1000 kilometers ...) ]

There is a shop called ACT in the Königsbrückerstraße. They are selling second hand laptops. It is on the right side if you go from Albertplatz to Schauburg (Cinema). I think they have no homepage yet.
If you want a new one try www.winner-computer.de. It's a local store with online shop.

Sorry, but I would not prefer to buy at winner. My experience is, that they are cheating and aren't consumer friendly. If I have to buy there, I do it only for stuff where warranty isn`t important.

What's true. I had a defect hard disk, that was in warranty. They offered me two choices:
Frist, I give it back to them and it takes about 6 weeks (!) to get a replaced one. Second, _I_ send the defect drive to the manufactor and after 2 weeks, I'll get a repaired one. (I choosed the second.)
A great costumer service, isn't it?
I think, the lowest price isn't the best way of comparison, but as a student it is unfortunately the only one. ;-)
You can get also good prices at Sievers Computer, Freiberger Straße or M&M-Computer whit 3 branches in Dresden.
They have also a website: http://www.siecom.de/ http://www.mmcomputer.de/
Good luck, Erik
